biography
When he was a kid, Goro Akechi wanted to be a hero.
The unwanted bastard child of Masayoshi Shido, Goro was raised by his mother until he was nine. A poor sex worker, she struggled to support an unexpected, unwanted child, to balance her love for him with the depression that told her he'd be better off without her, the suffocating shame that his existence represented. And Goro did his best to be her hero: helping out at home as much as he could, taking care of her, following her orders without question, making himself small and palpable, easy to handle. It wasn’t enough to save her.He grew up in foster care after that, moved from one house to the next, never really given the chance to form attachments with anyone. To feel wanted by anyone. He was an annoyance, a burden, and as a throwaway child, he knew he would never be anything more than that. So he began investigating. He found his no-good father, he found the Metaverse, and he found Robin Hood–suddenly, the worthless child was special, unique, powerful. And after months of experimenting with his new abilities, at 15 years old, Goro approached his father with a proposal and a plan. His role as Detective Prince gave him an opportunity he'd never had before: the opportunity to make people like him. So he became perfect. Pleasant, intelligent, handsome, and charming, Goro Akechi molded himself into someone bland and likable, someone who appealed to everyone. Someone capable of anything, effortlessly good at whatever he may try.And it worked. Interviews, TV appearances, celebrity status… for the first time ever, Goro was loved.
Even if it wasn’t on a personal level, as long as he performed well enough, he could be wanted by everyone. So he performed, and performed, and performed, until that was all he knew how to do.But how many murders can you commit before you stop being a hero, before you lose the ability to lie even to yourself? How complicit can you be in the evils you swore to stop before they become a part of you? How much can you be used before your autonomy is fully lost? How much can be justified for the sake of revenge? The longer Goro worked for Shido, the more his ideals rotted. He could no longer reconcile his image of himself as a pure, heroic warrior of justice with the heinous crimes he had committed, and in the wake of that righteousness, long-suppressed anger, bitterness, and hate grew freely, and his cognitive dissonance gave birth to Loki.Still, there remained a part of him that desperately wished he could be the righteous Detective Prince he pretended to be. That his talk of justice wasn't soiled by the blood on his hands. That he was a hero, a true Robin Hood. And maybe that's why he hated the Phantom Thieves so much. They got to be what he couldn't, after all, and they did it together. But he needed to be perfect. He needed to be superior. And no worthless, criminal trash was going to ruin that, no matter how much he played at the ideas of friendship and justice. Goro didn’t need friends, not when he had fans, when his justice was the center of his world. And his justice would not be sated until Masayoshi Shido was ruined.
OTHER.
He lives alone in an apartment near Kichijoji. Post-canon, he moves to Ogikubo.
Goro only begins questioning his gender post-canon. Prior to that, he would consider himself a cis boy, if anything at all.
